Don’t get me wrong, I have loved this experience so far. Everyday, with every place we visit, there are new things to see and do, and I’m incredibly thankful that I’ve been fortunate enough to have this opportunity to travel. I would recommend it to anyone!
But... as it’s been over a month now since we left the UK, I’ve taken some time to reflect on some of the things I miss most about home.
Here are ten of those things (in no particular order):
1. Home cooked food.
The food we’ve had out here has been, for the most part, really good. Sometimes, however, you just want a nice, home cooked meal. I know Siwan, in particular, has been craving a good old roast dinner! I wouldn’t say no to that ;)
2. Computer games.
It’s not so much the games themselves; it’s more about the stupid things my friends and I talk about while playing together. I guess, in some ways, it’s similar to watching movies with your friends; you’re only half paying attention to what’s actually on the screen.
3. Seeing friends
How would this not appear on the list? I miss the quick catch-ups, the nights out, the BBQs, the dinners and all the other times we all get together. These guys mean a whole bunch to me and I’m glad I have them in my life!
4. Mum.
Love you, Mum!
5. Teaching.
To be honest, I thought I’d be glad to be away from the stresses of teaching (the many, many stresses). As it turns out, I miss having my own class. I miss the mix of personalities that you get to know, the random nonsensical moments in the classroom and, of course, the feeling of satisfaction you get from helping a child achieve something new.
I do NOT miss the paperwork.
6. Banter at work.
I had a lot of fun over the past five years, due mostly to the wonderful people I worked with. Teaching isn’t an easy job; sometimes you have to laugh just so that you don’t have a full on mental breakdown. Luckily, I had lots of people around to me to help make everyday more enjoyable.
7. Not having to wear bug spray.
Insect repellent sucks. It stinks and it makes me feel greasy. When I forget to wear it, I get eaten alive. Nuff said.
8. Having clean clothes when you want them.
Sometimes you just don’t want to wear that same sweaty t-shirt again, but it’s all you have left.
Laundry days are always good days.
9. My own bed.
We’ve had some nice hotel rooms but nothing beats your own bed, right?
10. Drinkable tap water.
I’d rather be able to refill my bottle instead of buying new ones over and over again.
Also, where does the water come from to make the ice in my drink...?
Just to reiterate, this list was just for fun and not meant to sound like me moaning about travelling (sorry if it came across that way). I’ve loved our time out here and look forward to the months ahead! :)
