George Town is the capital of Penang, an island on the east coast of Malaysia. To get there, we flew in from Langkawi which took around 20 minutes and was roughly the same price as taking the ferry.
Our hostel was basic but clean and quiet, just what we wanted. It was in a pretty good location too as it was close to the centre of George Town. Nearby, was an area known as Little India where we were able to try some amazing food during our stay.
One of the things George Town is known for is the street art that adorns the walls of many of the buildings around the town. We spent the morning of our first full day wandering around and exploring the busy streets, enjoying the artwork as we went. I had just bought a new phone so it was great opportunity to test out the camera!
For lunch, we wanted to have some roti canai. This is a type of flatbread you usually eat with curry or similar sauces. It is absolutely delicious and Malaysia is one of the best places for it. Unfortunately, the restaurants and street vendors in George Town only serve it for breakfast and dinner so we were out of luck (for the time being).
While we were out and about, we came across Magic World, a venue which hosts live magic shows everyday. The ticket price was around £5 each so we decided to give it a go. When we got inside, we were initially a little disappointed as the venue was tiny and there were only about 12 seats. We didn't expect to walk into a westend theatre but we thought we'd at least be able to sit down (all of the seats had been taken already).
With that said, our dissapoint quickly faded when the show began. The magician was a pretty funny guy and his tricks were entertaining; we ended up having really good time!
Later, we spent some time looking around a mall in the more modern part of the town. Siwan was pleased to hear the shops blasting Christmas tunes but was disappointed that she couldn't find an advent calendar.
We spent the morning of the next day visiting some of the historical 19th-century buildings around the town, including St. George's Church and the Pinang Peranakan Mansion.
Our afternoon was filled, once again, with us acting like children at an interactive 'museum'. This time it was the Upside Down Museum. As you walk from room to room, the friendly members of staff show you where to stand and take pictures of you on your phone (for free, of course). It was good fun and a nice way to spend an hour.
Then, it was roti canai for dinner and back to the hostel to relax.
George Town is a really cool place and was definitely worth the visit; we really enjoyed our time here!
